All of Wingaway’s medical procedures are overseen by its medical consultant, Dr V J Affleck (BSc MB BS DAvMed DOHS AFAsMA), who has considerable experience in aviation medicine and is higly respected in this field.

    Dr Affleck conducts Wingaway’s annual in-house training for aviation medicine, triage for aero-medical flight, in-flight management and currency training for flight nurses.



  • Sandy swanton

    Sandy is a Registered Nurse and Registered Midwife. She has held te position of Chief Flight Nurse at Wingaway for the past 3 years and has been flying with us for over 6 years. Sandy’s nursing experience spans over 30 years, and in that time Sandy has gained extensive experience in Labour Ward, maternity and women’s health, Special Care Nursery, radiology and oncology nursing and general medical and surgical nursing.

  • gail sawyer

    Gail is a highly experienced Clinical Nurse Specialist with over 36 years of experience, 33 of those being served at St.George Hospital. Like all of our experienced nurses, Gail has acquired numerous nursing specialities over the years such as Critical Care, ICU, Surgical, Pediatrics, Neuro-orthopedics, Urology- gyne, Acute care obstetrics post-op, facial maxillary, general surgery, pain management, trauma surgery, vascular, plastics and cardio thoracic. Gail has worked as a Flight Nurse for the past 4yrs.

  • damien vickers

    Damien is a Wingaway Flight Nurse, a Registered Nurse with over 10 years experience in theatre nursing, specializing in scrub / scout, anesthetics and recovery nursing, and para-medicine. Damien followed his love of emergency medicine in 2006 when he joined the Ambulance Service of New South Wales as a Paramedic. Damien is still as passionate about patient care as ever, having just commenced his second degree in health care with further plans to specialize in aviation health care. Damien holds a Bachelor of Nursing with distinctions.

  • barbara ross

    Barbara is a Registered Nurse and Midwife. Her principal field of nursing has been as an operating theatre nurse which gave Barbara an insight into anatomy and the ability of the body and spirit to overcome seemingly devastating illness. She also worked in a recovery ward where caring for post surgical patients increased her knowledge of resuscitation techniques. Barbarah has worked a number of years in Australia and Canada as a midwife, and her career then took her into quality management, tasked with the improvement of patient satisfaction with the hospital experience. She has also managed a number of operating suites. Barbara holds a Bachelor of Health Administration. Barbara joined the Wingaway team as a ground nurse, but her desire to fly soon saw her as a flight nurse and she now feels that she is in the best and most fulfilling stage of her career. Barbara puts it best when she says ” having contact with people of many backgrounds and health status, and being able to share with them their fears, anxieties and joys is a great privilege”.

  • Deborah Harmer

    Deborah has been a Registered Nurse for over 23 years and began her career at the Sydney Childrens’ Hospital. She has extensive knowledge and experience working within the pediatric /neonatal intensive care setting. Deborah has been a Wingaway Flight Nurse for over 2 years and is also employed as the Team Leader of the SCN within a local maternity unit.

    Her qualifications include a Diploma of Applied Science (Nursing), Certificate in Neonatal Intensive Care from the College of Nursing and a Graduate Certificate in Neonatal Intensive Care from the University of Sydney.

    Deborah says that she greatly enjoys working with the wide variety of patients that she sees, as well as the challenges that accompany the job as a Flight Nurse.

  • sandy johnson

    Sandy is a Registered Nurse and Clinical Nurse Specialist, with over 45 years experience. She has Intensive Care, General Medical and surgical experience. Sandy has worked in Emergency for 10 years, has worked in the Community Palliative care team at the Calvary hospital for over 5 years as well as having many years experience in aged care. Sandy has a further 10 years experience as a Community Health Nurse and was involved in the Federal Government research into medication review as advisor to General Practitioners.

    Sandy’s qualifications include a Graduate Diploma in Clinical Practice with a major in Palliative Care, a Continence Advisors Certificate and a Triage certificate.

  • Nick Tratsellas

    Nick is responsible for the development and implementation of Wingaway’s marketing activities. He has been busy over the past 12 months as the company has undergone the most comprehensive rejuvenation of its brand in over a decade. The most visible elements of the rebranding program can be seen in our new aircraft livery, vehicle signage and uniforms. Nick also manages key projects, including the implementation of the airline scheduling system (Takeflite); aircraft patient loading systems; powered stretcher systems, and is also responsible for the management of tender activities.

    Nick’s knowledge of the aviation industry stems from his years of experience as a commercial pilot, logging over 2500 hours mainly as an aerobatics flight instructor. His flying adventures have seen him fly to India and Tahiti in single engine turbines, prior to hanging up his flight suit and resuming his passion for business. Nick has previously managed the marketing program for a national franchise, has operated his own business and has always maintained a passion for business and marketing. Nick’s qualifications include an Advanced Diploma of Aviation and Associate Diploma of Business (Computing), and he is currently studying part-time for a Bachelor of Business (Marketing/Management).
